About the Department :

             The department of basic sciences is the largest among other departments in the college  of dentistry in term of the number of subjects taught,  ten, that comprise the preclinical discipline . Thirty eight teaching staff members are attached to this department . They have granted their degrees from well known universities of United kingdom , Belgium , Canada and Iraqi universities.

              This department has been reestablished in 2002 , prior to that time teaching of basic science subjects were the responsibility of other departments, therefore our teaching staff members have done their utmost efforts to expand on this department and take the accountability of teaching all disciplines assigned to dentistry students during their first three years of their study , both practical and lectures are given in the lecture halls and laboratories of the department  which are located in the old building .

                As for graduate studies is concerned , we shall be accepting students for M.Sc. program in the year 2006-2007 to contribute in providing the specialists in the areas of basic sciences to take responsibilities of the newly established new dentistry colleges all over the governorates of Iraq .

     Thirty one (31) with B.Sc. and B.V.M.Ss. degrees , responsible in preparing and demonstrating  the practical sessions of subject .

Information about Post- graduate students/year + Degree awarded :

    Many of our teaching staff members participate in teaching postgraduate study program in the following assigned courses. (General physiology, Oral physiology, Immunology, Microbiology, computer & Biostatistics, Pharmacology.) 

    In addition many members have joint supervision of M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis with those of other departments and colleges.

Information about under – graduate students :

   Department of basic sciences bear the responsibility of teaching students during their first three years (preclinical ) , they are about (736) students during year 2004-2005 .

The following subjects are taught :

 1^st  year     Biology , Chemistry, Physics , computers& biostatistics .

2^nd year    Physiology ,  Biochemistry , histology .

3^rd  year    Microbiology , Pharmacology .
