About the Department :

             In Iraq, the formal Orthodontic education has commenced in 1973 as a part of the Pedodontics-Orthodontics-Preventive dentistry (P.O.P.) department at the University of Baghdad. In 2003, the Orthodontic branch was isolated in independent department. The prime objectives of the department are:

1. Providing undergraduate education (theoretical, laboratory and clinical courses).

2. Postgraduate higher education (M.Sc.).

3. Treating patients required orthodontic/orthopedic/orthognathic intervention with different modalities and techniques.

4. Advancement of Orthodontics through periodic arrangement and participation in

conferences and continuing education programs. In the department, there are:

         1. A laboratory for undergraduate students where they leam how to bend wires for removable

             orthodontic appliance.

         2. Technical laboratory for the construction of orthodontic removable and fixed appliance auxiliaries.

         3. Orthodontic clinic for undergraduate students where they treat patients with removable

              appliances.

         4. Postgraduate orthodontic clinic where the patients received treatment with many types of

              appliances and techniques.

         5. Orthognathic surgical clinic

Type of treatment (s) offered to the patients:

               1. Orthodontic treatment by removable and fixed appliances (Standard Edgewise, Straight Wire

    Technique and rarely Begg technique).

2. Orthopedic treatment through myofunctional appliance therapy

3. Orthognathic surgical correction and rehabilitation of cleft lip and palate patients through

     collaboration with many specialized centers.

Information about post - graduate / year + degree awarded :

The postgraduate studies usually extended over a period of two years after which the student awarded the M.Sc. degree in orthodontics when he fulfilled the following requirements:

1. Basic sciences courses (human anatomy, general and oral physiology, microbiology, and oral histology).

2. More concentrated program of higher education courses (Dental material, occlusion, research method,

    and Biostatistics and computer sciences).

3. Loading system of seminars and lectures related to Orthodontics.

4. Clinical requirement of patients treated with different techniques.

5. A thesis submitted to the college

Information about under – graduate students :

   

1. The 4th year undergraduate student should be enrolled in a laboratory program of wire bending for at

     least three hours per week with a theory program of one hour per week.

2. In addition to more loaded lectures program, the 5th year undergraduate student should complete a

    predetermined clinical requirement of orthodontic patient treatment of simple malocclusion with

    removable appliances through three hours per week of clinical work together seminars preparation of

    specified issues related to Orthodontics.
